Marine Surveys & Reports

Preparing for your marine survey

Preparing for your marine survey is an important step. The main objective is to make all areas and systems aboard the craft easily accessible for inspection. This may involve stowing away personal belongings, gear, dock lines, mooring ropes… As well, the panels that provide access to certain parts of the boat such as the hull, the engine room, etc. will need to be removed for the inspection.

All equipment (electronics, security systems, etc.) must be on board.

It is important for the owner(s) or their agent, or alternately the buyer when applicable, to be present during the marine survey.

The marine survey

Two parts are comprised in a full marine survey (re. pre-purchase). An inspection of the boat in dry dock, and a sea trial.

Surveys cannot be duly carried out in bad weather (heavy rain, snow, freezing conditions, etc.).

The hull, the structure of the pleasure boat, its equipment, its electrical circuitries, and assorted systems (water, propane, etc.), its rigging, etc. will all be inspected. The marine surveyor will also conduct moisture readings (Tramex marine moisture meter) and perform percussion delamination tests.

The survey includes no destructive testing, nor will the surveyor dismantle any parts or equipment during the assessment process.

If the boat has power during the inspection, the surveyor will be able to inspect the electrical and electronic circuits.

Unless otherwise agreed, the rigging will be inspected from the deck only.

The duration of the inspection depends both on the size of the boat, and on the amount of equipment aboard.

The marine survey report

A complete and detailed marine survey report, with photos, will be forwarded to you in the days following the survey.

The survey report is designed according to the standards of the Association of Chartered Marine Surveyors of Québec (AIMAQ), and of the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS).

It includes recommendations that fall into 3 categories:
–A- Corrections concerning safety, to be addressed before the boat is launched.
-B- Corrections to be implemented in the year following the marine survey report.
-C- Suggested corrective actions.

A section of the report is allocated to the boat’s appraisal, or market value assessment.

An electronic copy of the survey report will be forwarded to you by email. The report remains the exclusive property of the client, and it will not be forwarded to third parties or other organizations.

After your marine survey report has been sent to you, your marine surveyor will call you to answer eventual questions.
